How Long Bad Marks Stay on Your Credit Report

Negative marks have expiry dates set by federal law. Knowing them removes a lot of unnecessary panic, because the damage is heaviest at the start and fades steadily.

Set by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Impact declines well before removal.

The part that matters more than the dates

Scoring models weight recent behaviour far more heavily than old behaviour. A late payment from four years ago, followed by four years of clean history, does very little to your score even though it is technically still listed.

This is why the correct response to a negative mark is not despair, it is consistency. You cannot delete it. You can bury it under enough positive history that it stops mattering long before it drops off.

Dispute genuine errors. You are entitled to free reports from all three bureaus through the official federal site. If a mark is inaccurate, the bureau must investigate. Errors are more common than people assume, and disputing them is free.

What does not work

Companies promising to remove accurate negative information cannot do it. Nobody can. If the mark is accurate, it stays for its statutory period. Paying a credit repair company to dispute accurate items achieves nothing you could not do free, and often nothing at all.

Paying off a collection

Paying a collection does not remove it from your report, though newer scoring models treat paid collections more favourably than unpaid ones. Get any settlement agreement in writing before you pay.

The short version

Common questions

How long do late payments stay on a credit report?

Seven years from the date of the delinquency. Their effect on your score diminishes substantially over that period.

Does paying off a collection remove it?

No, it remains for the seven year period, though newer scoring models treat paid collections better than unpaid ones.

Can credit repair companies delete accurate bad marks?

No. Accurate information stays for its statutory period. Anyone promising otherwise is selling something they cannot deliver.
